Our Angels Spread Their Wings BIG & Celebrate Another Year of Service at Spring Luncheon at the Meyerson

More than 400 Angels of Charity members and fellow friends of the Angels gathered at the beautiful Meyerson Symphony Center, which was decorated with bright Spring colors and flowers that energized the elegant, sun-lit entryway making for quite a special afternoon of celebration.

As guests crossed Flora street from the traditional Mass at the Cathedral Shrine of the Virgin of Guadalupe in downtown Dallas, the Meyerson began to fill up with laughter, chatter and smiling Angels thrilled for another opportunity to see their fellow Angel members as they wrap up another year of Angelic service supporting Catholic Charities of Dallas.

Before the lunch and featured presentation began, guests mingled and gathered around some of the featured vendor tables near check-in which included Margaret Palmer Jewelry, who was back by popular demand providing a fun opportunity to shop her esquisite designer pearl jewelry pieces just in time for Mother’s Day. Plus, each jewelry purchase provided a percentage of it’s sale as a donation from MP to Catholic Charities of Dallas!

Another table featured popular local author, Patricia Kagerer selling her “Wise Irish Women” book which was a HUGE hit as it features former Executive Director of CCD and fellow Angels Founding member, Sr. Mary Anne Owens, SSND! Each book sale also provided a percentage of the sale to be donated to CCD. Still wish you purchased a book for yourself or friend? You still can, through our website for $22, plus shipping at www.CCofDallas.org/wise-irish-women today! These books were a big hit, as many guests bought a couple to give to friends or family, including their moms for Mother’s Day! Get yours today!

Guests finally found their tables and were seated for a lovely lunch which began with a beautiful prayer from Sr. Margaret Ann Moser. The featured presentation of “Women in Leadership Roles Serving the Church” was thoroughly enjoyed as the Diocesan leaders, which included Sr. Gloria Cain, Mary Edlund, Annette Gonzales Taylor, Barbara Landregan & Sr. Theresa Khirallah, inspired all guests in attendance by providing motivational and moving words of their experiences as leaders in the Diocese serving the church.

The afternoon wrapped up with the Angel of the Year, Joanie Stephens, took the stage to accept her award in which she was most deserving. Stephens followed by passing the torch of Angels Board president to fellow Angel, Marie Hylden, as she begins her term as incoming Angels president 2012 – 2013!

Thank you again to all who attended this year’s luncheon.  With your support and attendance, Catholic Charities of Dallas is able to continue to support and provide assistance to families struggling in Dallas.

A special thank you to our incredible Luncheon co-chairs Carol Ann Davis, Marie Hylden & Mary Claire Dahlstrom along with their committee for their endless work and time dedicated toward this year’s event, which truly made it a complete success.

VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT: All Saints Catholic School Stops By CCD for some Spring Planting!

Thank you to our generous group of volunteers from All Saints Catholic School in Dallas who stopped by Catholic Charities of Dallas at Mary R. Saner Child Development Center for a group volunteer project!

About 15 – 20 volunteers assisted with some spring planting around the front of the center making it look fresh and fun for the Spring & Summer season! They planted shrubs and flowers by the CCD sign and then planted classroom pots full of different colors and textures. Each box came with a note to the children with instructions on caring for the plants. The kids LOVED it!

Thank you to these volunteers from the community for all of your generosity!

MOTHER’S DAY CLIENT SPOTLIGHT: A Single Mother Finds Hope & Motivation at CCD

Chalia was seeking help during a very tumultuous time of her life while caring for her two young children as a single mother. She lost her job and sadly didn’t qualify for unemployment. To add to her struggle, her ex-husband stopped providing child support for their two children months before.

Just as she thought her situation couldn’t get any worse, Chalia’s car broke down, causing her to have no means of transportation besides public transit while searching for a new job.

Chalia came to Catholic Charities of Dallas and requested financial assistance to pay her rent until she could find another steady job to support herself and two children. The caseworker was able to provide her with rental assistance to prevent eviction.  In addition, the caseworker enrolled Chalia in the Money Skills for Life financial education course offered by Catholic Charities of Dallas, which provided classes on how to budget her money more effectively, and how to create a spending plan in order to save for the future.

Chalia’s caseworker was also able to utilize the organization’s “network of human services” and referred her to Catholic Charities of Dallas’ Job Placement program in order to assist with finding a job.

Chalia was successfully able to find employment through the Job Placement program, and was so thankful to be able to provide again for her two children. She finished the Money Skills for Life financial education course, and was so motivated to learn more to improve her family’s life that she enrolled in GED classes!

“Thanks Catholic Charities of Dallas for all your assistance paying my rent and finding a job.  More importantly, thank you for the financial education course that ultimately changed my life. Thank you for being a resource and encouraging people to be self-sufficient.”

In celebration of Mother’s Day, we thank Chalia and other mothers like her that go above and beyond every day to take care of their family, providing service to others.

Happy Mother’s Day from Catholic Charities of Dallas to all of our clients, staff, supporters, volunteers and friends! Donate in honor of all of the incredible mothers and maternal presences in your life by giving to our Mother’s Day 2012 Campaign online at www.CCofDallas.org/Mother.

CALL TO ACTION: Religious Liberty, Our First Most Cherished Liberty

Please see the following Call to Action from the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops.  Bishop Farrell and his brother bishops ask that, later in the year, the Feast of Christ the King be “a day specifically employed by bishops and priests to preach about religious liberty, both here and abroad.” Please carefully read the document found at http://www.usccb.org/issues-and-action/religious-liberty/our-first-most-cherished-liberty.cfm  so that you may share this important information.

Please also note the call for “A Fortnight for Freedom,” to run June 21 to July 4, as a special period of prayer, study and catechisms that emphasizes the importance of religion in both our Christian and American history.   Let us pray that by making our voices heard, our government leaders will make critically needed changes to the very harmful HHS mandate that currently violates our religious liberty

Action Alert: Congress, Careless Cuts Cost Lives: Our nation must remain a leader in lifting up poor and vulnerable people everywhere

ACTION ALERT: Congress, Careless Cuts Cost Lives: Our nation must remain a leader in lifting up poor and vulnerable people everywhere

.S. poverty-focused international assistance is making it possible for this child in a poor, remote village in India to receive a polio vaccine. While polio is rare, it is a frightening reality in India and other developing countries. Moreover, a polio outbreak in India or elsewhere in the world could have serious consequences for unvaccinated people in far-off places, spreading rapidly and causing paralysis in children for life and sometimes even killing them.

Congress is now preparing to make important decisions about how much funding to make available for programs such as this polio vaccine initiative and many others that are saving and changing lives around the world. While our nation’s fiscal challenges are significant, poverty-focused international assistance makes up less than 0.5% of the U.S. federal budget. This little bit of funding saves millions of lives around the world by providing food to the hungry, shelter to refugees, helping small farmers grow more crops, and educating children for a more prosperous and stable future. Cutting this assistance will not balance the federal budget, but careless cuts will cost lives. For further background, read these recent letters to the House and Senate Subcommittees by Bishop Richard Pates, Chair of the Committee on International Justice and Peace of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, and Dr. Carolyn Woo, President of Catholic Relief Services.

Your voice makes a difference. Your support for this lifesaving funding last year helped stave off steep cuts.  Your voice is now needed again. Contact your members of Congress today and urge them to support poverty-focused international assistance in the fiscal year 2013 appropriations bills at the highest levels possible.
