More information about Refugee and Empowerment Services
Who is a refugee? A refugee is someone who has been forced to flee his or her country because of persecution, war, or violence. A refugee has a well-founded fear of persecution for reasons of race, religion, nationality, political opinion or membership in a particular social group. Most likely, they cannot return home or are afraid to do so. War and ethnic, tribal and religious violence are leading causes of refugees fleeing their countries.
Thousands of refugees flee their homelands each year, leaving behind everything they once had in order to start a new life in the United States. More than any other entity in the country, Catholic Charities of Dallas, Inc. works with the United States government to shelter these victims of circumstance. Our Refugee Resettlement Program is responsible for assisting hundreds of refugees each year with starting a new life in Dallas. The program assists with transportation from the airport upon arrival, apartment rent and furnishings (kitchen appliances, cookware, dinnerware, bedding, toiletries, etc.), ESL classes, cultural orientation, job placement services, and much more.
